Houston Texans owner Bob McNair issued a public apology Friday for his comments regarding the protests taking place during the National Anthem around the NFL.
“We can’t have the inmates running the prison” are the words McNair said during last week’s NFL owners meeting in New York.
Perhaps McNair was confused, thinking he owned the Dallas Cowboys?
“I regret that I used that expression,” McNair said in response to the sweeping critiques of his choice of words. “I never meant to offend anyone and I was not referring to our players. I used a figure of speech that was never intended to be taken literally. I would never characterize our players or our league that way and I apologize to anyone who was offended by it.”
Word of the owner’s comments spread to his team, which reportedly had to persuaded to stay at practice Friday. Star WR DeAndre Hopkins skipped practice as a response to McNair.

Numerous players around the league including Richard Sherman have condemned McNair’s comments, with players like Draymond Green outside of football even chiming in.
