As of Friday morning the status of Ryan Tannehill‘s knee is still up in the air. Initial reports suggested an MRI found no structural damage after he suffered a non-contact injury during practice on Thursday.
However, subsequent reports suggested the MRI was actually inconclusive, and that, after last season’s partial ACL tear, the Miami Dolphins are worried Tannehill will need season-ending knee surgery.
After making the playoffs last year, the Dolphins are looking to take another step forward this year. If they do lose their number one quarterback for the season, it’s unlikely that they’ll settle for veteran backup Matt Moore.
Naturally, this realization had the internet wondering if the Dolphins might kick the tires on the supposedly blackballed Colin Kaepernick. He is, after all, the most experienced and accomplished quarterback currently on the market, having led the 49ers to the Super Bowl back in 2013.
However, there’s now a new name in the mix as a possible replacement for Tannehill. And no, it’s not Tony Romo.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, sources close to former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler say he would put his nascent broadcasting career on hold and come out of retirement to play for Dolphins coach Adam Gase, who helped Cutler revitalize his career when he was an offensive coordinator with the Bears in 2015.
And for the record, and I’m speculating, but I sense Adam Gase would give Jay Cutler a call before giving Colin Kaepernick a ring.

Of course, there is a catch. While sources say the Dolphins job is the only one Cutler would consider at this point, he’ll only put his broadcast career on hold if the Dolphins make him the starter and pay him starter money.
So what are the Dolphins going to do? Are they going to stick with Matt Moore, a perfectly competent backup? Or will they roll the dice on either Cutler or Kaepernick?
