Former NFL great Warren Sapp has been in the news quite often since his football career ended, and usually for all the wrong reasons. This time, it wasn’t entirely his fault.

While lobstering in the Florida Keys Wednesday, Sapp was bitten by a shark, who took a nasty chunk out of his elbow. Two Conchs, the charter Sapp was with, posted the photo of the Hall of Famer’s deep, bloody bloody gash to their Instagram account:

According to the captain, they were about seven miles out from Marathon in 9 feet of water when Sapp reached for a lobster that a shark well, also wanted.

“The sharks hang around those lobster holes, because they feed on the lobster as well,” Jack Carlson said.

Carlson said Sapp “may need stitches” for the injury — to the inside of his left forearm, near the elbow — but that he kept fishing. “We bandaged it up, put some gauze on there, some black electrical tape and hit a couple more spots, then headed in,” Carlson noted.

If anything, Sapp, who’s a regular on fishing charters down in Florida, sacrificed the bite for a good cause, as the lobster hunt was going towards the marathon Youth Club.
