The injury looked bad, and judging by the initial prognosis, it is bad.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots do believe their star wide receiver Julian Edelman did in-fact tear his ACL during tonight’s preseason game vs Detroit Lions:

Edelman will undergo further tests on Sunday but according to Ian Rappaport of NFL Network, the MRI is to confirm what the team already knows.
Edelman is coming off a season where he hauled in 98 receptions for 1,106 yards and three touchdowns.
The Patriots had hoped they could team Edelman alongside tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receiver Brandin Cooks as they look to defend their championship.
