The 2-10 Giants have fired head coach Ben McAdoo and GM Jerry Reese, team sources confirmed to SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano.

McAdoo’s firing had been expected, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen reporting Sunday that the team could fire McAdoo in the 24 hours after yesterday’s game against the Raiders.

This is the first time the Giants have fired a head coach in-season.

Co-owner John Mara defended McAdoo and the rest of the Giants’ coaching staff earlier this season, but the recent benching of Eli Manning and how it was handled may have changed his mind, according to the ESPN report. Despite saying he wouldn’t be making any in-season firings at the time, this incident may have pushed him over the edge as he alluded to there being no guarantees for his coaching staff moving forward.

“There’s no guarantees in life,” Mara said earlier this week. “I made a statement on that a couple weeks ago, but there are no guarantees in life.”

Mara took responsibility for the benching decision, but said he didn’t like the way McAdoo handled the situation. Mara said there was a misunderstanding, but McAdoo said the two were on the same page.

After becoming head coach in 2016, McAdoo went 13-16, which included the playoff loss to the Packers last season.
