Drew Brees Says President Trump Is Wrong About Kneeling & The Flag After Learning This Week

Drew Brees found himself in a PR nightmare earlier this week when he appeared on Yahoo Financial for an interview and said he’ll “never agree with” someone who kneels during the National Anthem – despite the current climate and deaths of numerous unarmed black citizens at the hands of police.

Brees was shamed by numerous figures around the sports world, including his own teammates, whom he held a meeting with the same day to discuss where he went wrong.

After learning that the anthem doesn’t mean the same to everyone as it does to Brees, the Saints QB apologized twice on social media.

The apology trigged President Donald Trump, who has stood firm on his stance of not kneeling, even calling those who do “sons of bitches”, to condemn Brees for apologizing for what he said.

Brees then took to social media on Friday night to send an open letter to Trump, explaining what he learned and why the President should change his outlook on the issue.

To @realdonaldtrump Through my ongoing conversations with friends, teammates, and leaders in the black community, I realize this is not an issue about the American flag. It has never been. We can no longer use the flag to turn people away or distract them from the real issues that face our black communities. We did this back in 2017, and regretfully I brought it back with my comments this week. We must stop talking about the flag and shift our attention to the real issues of systemic racial injustice, economic oppression, police brutality, and judicial & prison reform. We are at a critical juncture in our nation’s history! If not now, then when? We as a white community need to listen and learn from the pain and suffering of our black communities. We must acknowledge the problems, identify the solutions, and then put this into action. The black community cannot do it alone. This will require all of us.
