Baker Mayfield Throws Interception In First Practice With Carolina Panthers

Just as he did last season, Baker Mayfield is back throwing interceptions. At least, the ones he is throwing in July do not count.

The recently traded QB was on the field with his new team on Wednesday and wasted very little time turning the ball over. Mayfield was trying to go deep to his WR when he found himself being intercepted by Keith Taylor.

It’s best to have turnovers in practice against teammates than in real games where it will cost you big time. Not comparing the two, but Patrick Mahomes famously threw seven interceptions in six practices back in 2018. He turned out to be just fine.

The Browns traded Mayfield earlier this month, dealing the former top pick to Carolina for a conditional mid-round draft pick. He also decided to take a pay cut to help facilitate the deal.

The Panthers will pay just $4.85 million of Mayfield’s salary, while the Browns will pay $10.5 million, per ESPN.

Mayfield will have an opportunity to win the starting job in Carolina, but it won’t be handed to him. He’ll have to compete with Sam Darnold.

He is in need of a bounce-back season after he completed 60.5% of his passes for 3,010 yards, and 17 touchdowns against 13 interceptions.
