REPORT: Jimmy Garoppolo ‘Ghosted The 49ers For Weeks’ Each Offseason Until They Drafted Trey Lance

Jimmy G’s future remains unclear as the 2022 NFL season creeps closer and Trey Lance has already replaced him as the guy in San Francisco.

A new report is not helping matters as an unnamed member of the team’s coaching staff in 2018 told Mike Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle something about the QB, as relayed by Peter King’s Football Morning in America:

“Once he left that press conference [announcing his new contract] nobody heard from him for weeks and weeks. He didn’t return calls, he didn’t return texts — he basically just vanished. And we were looking at each other going, ‘What just happened?’”

Things only got worse as the report added Jimmy G’s current behavior as a member of the team:

“Garoppolo, who quarterbacked this team to a win over Aaron Rodgers and the top-seeded Packers eight months ago, is a strange sight to behold these days. He works out, throws and rehabs apart from his teammates, most often when they’re inside in meetings. When the other 89 men on the San Francisco roster are practicing outside, Garoppolo is usually inside, or on his way home. I heard he does not have a playbook, does not attend quarterback or team meetings and barely knows new quarterbacks coach Brian Griese.”

Last month, the 49ers gave Jimmy Garoppolo’s agents, Don Yee and Carter Chow, permission to seek a trade for the quarterback. So far, nothing much has happened. Despite not being able to find a trade partner, Lynch was clear that the 49ers would not release Garoppolo.

He is set to cost the 49ers $26.95 million in 2022 cap space and if the team traded or released him, it would save the team $25.55 million.

The 30-year-old threw for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in ’21 during his 15 games played.
