The 49ers are losing a cornerstone on their defensive

Nine year veteran Arik Armstead is set to become a free agent as the San Francisco 49ers are planning on releasing him, according to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report.

The shocking release comes after the 49ers approached the 30-year-old defensive lineman about taking a pay cut. According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the 49ers asked Armstead to take a pay cut in order to stay on the team.

He was set to make $17.41 million this upcoming season. Armstead refused to take it and elected to become a free agent instead.
