Jerry Jones Strangely Compares Himself To Patrick Mahomes When Discussing Negotiating Contracts

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made a strange reference to Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes on his Thursday press conference.

Jones made this comparison while addressing the media after the Cowboys’ training camp session.

He used it to explain his cautious approach toward extending key players, including star pass rusher Micah Parsons, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and veteran quarterback Dak Prescott, all of whom are in line for new contracts.

Jones and the Cowboys have faced criticism for not extending their core players earlier and waiting till the last minute to get deals done as the market for their respective positions continue to surge.

Despite the criticism, Jones seems unfazed by the situation. He likened the team’s current strategy to being an option quarterback, much like Mahomes, suggesting that they are still evaluating their options.

“We’re buying time,” Jones said. “We’re an option quarterback and we haven’t handed it off or pitched it. We’re trying to make our mind up what to do. Does that sound like (Patrick) Mahomes to you?”

Here’s the strange clip:

The effectiveness of Jones’ approach to extending players remains to be seen. Currently WR CeeDee Lamb is holding out of camp and rumors that both he and star pass rusher Micah Parsons are seeking to be the highest paid player at their current position.

On top of that, their star quarterback Dak Prescott is in the final year of his deal and will likely be seeking a contract that will in-fact make him the highest paid quarterback in the NFL.

A very complex situation for the Cowboys as they enter an important 2024-25 season.
