Six years ago, Alex Smith suffered a life-threatening leg injury during his time with the Washington Commanders. Although Smith made an awesome comeback, the scars of the gruesome incident remain.
The former No. 1 overall pick posted a photo of his uncovered legs with the caption, “Probably should have put on sunscreen.” However, it wasn’t the sunburn that people were fixated on, rather the scars from his surgically repaired leg.
Smith was able to return from the injury and play in eight games for Washington in 2020. The three-time Pro Bowler retired and is now an NFL analyst for ESPN.
On top of that, the injury hasn’t slowed Smith down as he recently participated in his second Pan-Mass Challenge, a two-day, 200-mile bike ride raising money for cancer research.
“I’m incredibly lucky,” Smith recently told CBS News. “My journey and given where I was at and where I am today. I’m exactly that. I’m grateful. Things had to go right, and they did. I’m grateful for such a great team including my family who helped me get through that.”
