The effort of New York Giants cornerback Deonte Banks has been called into question when he had zero interest in tackling Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts on a scramble in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 28-3 loss.
Hurts took off right down the sideline on 3rd and 7 and Banks basically quit and allowed Hurts to run right by him and out of bounds.
The 16-yard run extended the drive and ultimately led to Hurts’ second rushing score of the game, a one-yard touchdown that provided the final score.
“I had a bad play,’’ Banks said. “I think I could have made it, but sometimes when you’re in the moment you just think like, ‘Nah,’ but I think could have made the tackle.’’
He failed to tackle Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb in Week 3 on a similar play. Banks did not give maximum effort in attempting to tackle Lamb, who took the short pass to the house for a 55-yard touchdown.
Longtime Giants defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson said at the time that he “liked nothing about it” and Banks conceded it was a “bad finish by me.”
Henderson appeared to be yelling at Banks on Sunday after the play Sunday since the second-year cornerback gave up on the play in front of the Giants’ sideline.
“We’ll take a look at all that stuff and whatever we need to address, we’ll address,’’ head coach Brian Daboll said. “I’m not going to get into the sideline or coaching part of it. But, none of it was good enough.’’
