Washington Commanders Selling Merchandise With Old Controversial ‘Redskins’ Name And Logo

It’s been six years since the Washington Commanders dropped the controversial “Redskins” name and logo but it seems like the organization has decided to go back to selling merch with the abandoned name and logo.

According to Erick Flack of WUSA 9, the CBS affiliate, in Washington, D.C., the Commanders are selling Mitchell & Ness throwback items featuring the Washington Redskins name and logo on merchandise honoring former players like Art Monk, Darrell Green and Sean Taylor in their team store and on the Fanatics website.

The team is claiming that “trademark preservation” is the reason for the merch, as limited commercial use is required to maintain their trademarks rights over the name and logo. The Commanders also insisted the sale of the merch does not indicate any intention of reverting to the Redskins name or logo.

After playing the 2020 and 2021 seasons as the “Washington Football Team,” the franchise officially unveiled their new Commanders name and logo in February 2022.
