Colin Kaepernick’s uncanny field awareness on display during this play in particular, as the 49ers’ QB alertly changes the play from throwing it to a wide open receiver to a simple, safe and effective hand off into traffic.

Backed up near their own end zone, the San Francisco 49ers decided to play it safe and run the football. However, if quarterback Colin Kaepernick would have looked around, he may have been able to audible to a pass play and put points up on the board.

Just look at the receivers on this play. It’s hard to be more open than that.

The cornerback at the top of the screen didn’t leave his receiver until the ball was snapped. However, Torrey Smith was open even before the snap—and he tried to let Kaepernick know.

A quick look around the line of scrimmage could’ve changed a run up the middle to a quick pass to the outside. Smith might still be running if Kaepernick had switched up the play.
