It’s not common practice to answer your phone in the middle of a telecast that you’re on, but the only acceptable excuse – that your wife is going into labor – is exactly what that call was for RGIII Saturday night.
Former college great and NFL QB Robert Griffin III was part of ESPN’s the sideline crew for the Fiesta Bowl, and after picking up his phone in the middle of the segment, his partners were stunned at what he was doing – until he let them know what the call was about.
He promptly sprinted off the field to make his way with Grete Šadeiko to a local hospital, and would miss the end of the one of the greatest bowl games ever… but we’d argue that’s a decent trade off.
