As the end of the college football and NFL seasons approach, we are getting closer to that time of the year where teams are looking for a new head coach.
So far this season, the Raiders (Josh McDaniels) and Panthers (Frank Reich) have fired their head coaches and there are reportedly going to be more teams that will be added to the team. One of those teams are the Chicago Bears and apparently they are already discussing their next head coach.
Appearing on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Diannai Russini of The Athletic said the Bears have “had some conversations” about Harbaugh if they decide to move on from head coach Matt Eberflus.
Harbaugh was a hot name in the 2022 coaching cycle but after not getting a job, he reportedly closed the door on returning to the NFL. But things have gotten very complicated with Harbaugh at Michigan. He started this season suspended for three games by the school in an attempt to satisfy the NCAA’s investigation into alleged recruiting violations during a COVID-19 dead period.
The NCAA is also investigating the Wolverines football program over allegations of illegal sign-stealing. He was suspended for three games by the Big Ten as a result. Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports has said it wouldn’t be surprising if Harbaugh ends up getting suspended for most of the 2024 season when the NCAA hands down its discipline.
The Bears make a lot of sense for Harbaugh if he leaves Michigan. He spent his first seven years of his playing career in Chicago. On top of that, former Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren left that job to become the CEO of the Chicago Bears last January.
Eberflus is in his second season as Bears head coach. The 53-year-old is 7-22 overall, including 4-8 through 12 games this season.
