It’s always nice seeing our military veterans throw out a first pitch at a baseball game…but its ten times better when they do it like this. Before the Washington Nationals took on the San Francisco Giants in Game 2 of the National League Division Series at Nationals Park, an very excited Army veteran wounded in Iraq threw out the ceremonial first pitch in a very unusual and crowd-pleasing way.
Sgt. First Class Brian Keaton (Ret.), who spent three-and-a-half years at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center recovering from a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder, decided that instead of merely tossing the ball, he would make his pitch a little more memorable.
In the grass near the mound, Keaton dropped to his stomach, army-crawled several feet and lobbed the ball towards home plate, as if it were a grenade, to the roar and laughter to the crowd.
Following the pitch, he then proceeded to write him wife Kristin’s name in the dirt behind the pitchers bump, stating that he has been deployed so much since 2001 and wished she could have been on the mound with him. “I would have never been there if it wasn’t for my wife raising kids while I was gone and loving me and taking care of me when I was sick. She’s the hero,” said Keaton.
