Calvin Johnson Admits He Retired Because The Lions Had No Shot At Winning A Super Bowl

It was though that Calvin Johnson retired from the NFL for health reasons. That explanation doesn’t seem as cut and dry after the longtime Detroit Lions WR’s latest comments.

Just a short time after taking a shot at his former team, saying the organization didn’t treat him the way they should have, Johnson explained by he decided to hang it up at a press conference for Italian Bowl XXXVII.

“I didn’t see a chance for them to win a Super Bowl at the time, and for the work I was putting in, it wasn’t worth my time to keep on beating my head against the wall and not going anywhere.”

Johnson may not have considered a return to Detroit, but he had thought about making a comeback in another city, there’s just one problem…

“If I was to keep playing, I would have to play in Detroit, and that just wasn’t for me anymore…

“I thought about it. I was stuck in my contract in Detroit, and they told me they would not release my contract so I would have to come back to them.”

“I’m not coming back to play, it’s too much of a toll on my body.”
