Duke Blue Devils football coach David Cutcliffe wanted to surprise walk-on DE Danny Doyle with a scholarship but wanted his special moment celebrated with his entire family.
Cutcliffe had Doyle’s parents break the news to the junior during a team meeting.
The meeting started as any meeting for the Duke football team would, Cutcliffe was having a conversation with the team when his phone rang.
One of the strictest Duke football meeting rules are no cell phones allowed, so you can imagine what the players were thinking to see their coach’s ring “unexpectedly” go off.
Cutcliffe called Doyle to the front of the room to take the call and it was the junior’s parents who broke the news to him that he was no longer a walk-on.
A brilliant idea by Cutcliffe.
