The Washington Redskins season ended short of the playoffs (again) this year but their name remains the forefront of the news as the NFL preps for a controversial Super Bowl week.
The National Congress of American Indians and the Oneida Indian Nation released a new ad as part of their Change the mascot campaign. The ad digitally removes the Redskins logo and name from the broadcast. The point of the advertisement is to demonstrate that if the Redskins were stripped of their name and mascot, they would still make the great and majority of the time, bad plays.
The NCAI executive director Jackie Pata and Oneida Indian Nation Representative Ray Halbritter explains in this press release why it’s important to take the name away:
“Our ‘Take it Away’ sport demonstrates that changing the name would not take anything away form the fan experience. By keeping the mascot, the Washington Ream’s ownership is forcing fans and players to support a dictionary-defined racial slur.”
