In possibly the most ironic ending to a bowl game in college history, Grambling State won Saturday’s Celebration Bowl after North Carolina Central had their extra point blocked on a would-be game-tieing extra point, thanks to an excessive celebration penalty.
NC Central’s Quentin Atkinson caught a 39-yard touchdown pass with a touch over two minutes remaining, setting up the point after. But there was a flag.
Atkinson took his helmet off after the catch – ‘excessive celebration’ by rule. That pushed back the PAT, to which Grambling subsequently blocked. NC Central failed to convert the onside kick that ensued.
