This probably won’t go over well in the Chargers locker room.

On Thursday, Phillip Rivers was asked about Melvin Gordon and his absence from the team’s training camp amid his contract dispute and instead of backing his running back, Rivers essentially downplayed Gordon’s importance and noted that L.A. is deep at the running back position with Austin Ekeler, Justin Jackson and Derrick Gore.

According to Matt Szabo of the Los Angeles Times:

“They’re going to get a lot of work. It certainly is a deep position for us, and those guys all love to play and work hard. We love Melvin, but we’re going to go with what we’ve got. It’s a pretty dang good group.”

Even Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu thought those comments were way too harsh:

And apparently, the man of the hour, Melvin Gordon agrees:

Gordon is set to enter the final year of a deal that will pay his $5.605 million in 2019.

Despite missing four games in 2018, he still racked up 885 yards and 10 touchdowns on a career-high 5.1 yards per carry, while also catching 50 passes for 490 yards and four touchdowns.
