REPORT: Cowboys Planning To Target Sean Payton As Next Head Coach

Earlier this week, it was announced that the Dallas Cowboys would not be giving head coach Jason Garrett a contract extension and he would essentially be coaching for his job in 2019.

This move makes sense on the part of the Cowboys as in the past, Garrett has under-preformed and led the Cowboys to multiple losing seasons or early playoff exits.

This past season, the team was able to overcome a slow start and finish strong to win the NFC East and actually win a playoff game, something that’s only been done twice before in the last 22 years. It seems that the Cowboys front office had a very good reason for not wanting to extend Garrett.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is reporting that the Cowboys have a plan in place to part ways with Garrett after his contract expires, and then they will attempt to lure Sean Payton from New Orleans to Dallas in 2020.

It may be easier said than done. The Cowboys would need to compensate the Saints for allowing Payton to leave, and that compensation likely would include at least one draft pick. The Cowboys also would have to pay Payton, who likely would expect (and rightfully so) eight figures per year, at a minimum.

Drew Brees turned 40 this year and you would think at some point he will start looking at retirement, and Sean Payton just might make his exit from the franchise right along with him.
