Shakira & J-Lo Took Political Shots At Donald Trump With Super Bowl Halftime Performance

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira rocked the stage in Miami on Sunday night during the big game’s halftime show, the first Latin Americans to do so in NFL history.

With Jay-Z helping produce the Super Bowl halftime shows now, having a political statement during Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s performance should come at no surprise.

If you weren’t distracted by the 15 straight minutes off hypnotizing rump shaking from the two Latin stars, you may have picked up on some of the subtle themes throughout the performance that hinted at their culture as well as some of the struggles those in Latin American countries have been going through.

At a point during the show, Latin American children were shown dancing and singing inside cage-like structures flanking the stage, an obvious nod the the immigrant/border situation. The song accompanied to the portion of the performance was, ‘Let’s Get Loud’, perhaps asking those to speak up on the issue.

Just after, Lopez, who is of Puerto Rican lineage, showed off her roots by bearing a huge Puerto Rican flag on stage. She’s has donated over a $1 million to the country’s recovery efforts since Hurricane devastated the island, recovery efforts that under President Donald Trump’s watch were widely criticized. Lopez sang and danced to Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born In The USA’ played, a nod at reminding those watching that Puerto Ricans are indeed American citizens.

A lighting formation that represented a fence was clear in the background of the performance.
