Former NFL quarterback Vince Young threw shade at current Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick by questioning why some quarterbacks have continued to get jobs in the NFL and he doesn’t.
Young told Sports Illustrated:
“I’d see a quarterback and be like ‘Dude is garbage, and I’m over here in the kitchen cooking turkey necks?! I hate to name drop, but [Ryan] Fitzpatrick is still playing?! He leads the league in interceptions and he’s still f–king getting paid? I mean, what the f— is going on?”
Fitzpatrick, who was the starter in New York with the Jets last season threw 17 interceptions, which was actually third-most in the league, behind Phillip Rivers (21) and current starting quarterback for the Bucs Jameis Winston (18).
Fitzpatrick led the league in interceptions in 2011 when he threw 23 picks playing for the Buffalo Bills.
Young, 34, recently attempted a comeback with the Saskatchewan Rough-Riders of the CFL, but he suffered a torn hamstring in training camp and was released earlier this month.
Vince Young last played in the NFL in 2014, when he signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns; he was released in less than two weeks, after the team drafted Johnny Manziel. Young announced his retirement the next month, having thrown 46 touchdowns and 51 interceptions during his NFL career.
Young is famously known for leading the Texas Longhorns to a BCS National Championship in 2006. He was drafted third overall by the Tennessee Titans and was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and reached the Pro Bowl in 2006 and 2009, but he struggled to consistently be successful.
His last regular season appearance came during a six-game stretch with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011.
Outside of his short stint with the Browns, Young had a cup of coffee with the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers.
Young’s off the field issues are well documented, he filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2014.
Outside of taking shots at ‘garbage quarterbacks’, Young also took a swing at his former Titans coach, Jeff Fisher.
Young claimed Fisher took all the fun out of football. Young descried an incident in which he was left behind on a road trip to Philadelphia after he left his ID at home and went to retrieve it:
“I feel like Fisher did that s— on purpose I’m pulling in, seeing them pull the door down. I can hear the team yelling.”
Young later told Fisher, “Where I’m from, that’s like saying F you.”
