Matthew Stafford Was Mic’d Up During Sunday’s Wild Card Game vs. Cowboys

Controversy overtook the amazing Wild Card Game between the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions last Sunday and now we get a more in-depth look at some of the players reaction to the picked up flag during the 4th quarter of the game. 

After the referees threw the flag on what looked to be an “ok” pass interfence call on Anthony Hitchens but after the lead official Pete Morelli announced the PI call to the world, that’s when the referees decided to pick up the flag and not give the Lions what should have been a first down. 

During the game, Lions QB Matthew Stafford was mic’d up and his reaction is pretty similar to those watching the game from a neutral stance.

    • No foul? You must be a freaking Cowboys fan, there was obvious holding leading to the obvious pass interference. The NFL said so, the ref team said so, the only person are greedy Cowboys fans, so just get over it.

        • 100% penalty, either PI, or a defensive hold or Bryant coming out onto the field with no helmet. there were 3 defensive penalties and these officials called none of them. the entire crew better not go on afetr this round.

          • Bad calls happen in every game. Its how you deal with them. The Lions should of sucked it up and gone for it on 4th and 1 instead of punting it away to an in MVP type of form Tony Romo.

          • Agreed with you, I’m a Giants fan and I watch the playoff games with no bias and I honestly say that Lions fans have no room to be talking. First off, Suh was suspended for a game and they lifted it to give the Lions a better chance in the playoffs. Then, in that same game, the entire first half was bullshit penalties against the Cowboys. Roughing the kicker when the kicker accidentally tripped himself over a Cowboy and then a Lion blatantly hit the Cowboy’s kicker next punt and there was no flag. Plus, they explained why the flag was taken back, because there was no pass interference. The Cowboys were actually the ones falsely being targetted by the refs and the rest of the NFL won’t shut their mouths because everyone hates the Cowboys too much to hold a logical argument.

          • How about the offensive player grabbing the defenders facemask? Or should that not have been called because it wasnt against the cowboys? GTFO of here you dumbass hater.

          • Typical idiots wanna make excuses instead manning up and admitting it was a shit call. Even the NFL officials said it was. And I better not never ever the rest of my life see another flag thrown for face guarding a WR since it all of the sudden is legal.

          • Faceguarding is only illegal in college. It is perfectly legal in the NFL. And the contact before the pass was very minimal. I’m a 49ers fan who hates the Cowboys and I disagreed with the pass interference call as soon as the flag was thrown. Picking it up was the right thing to do. That said, Dez Bryant should’ve been penalized for coming onto the field without a helmet to argue the call and the Lions should’ve gone for it on 4th and 1.

          • I agree the a flag should have been thrown on Dez Bryant but that was up to the ref. Dez was able to go onto the field without his helmet on but so long as the ref felt he did not interfere with the game or if Bryant did not do as the official told him to do in getting back. Now if Bryant did not do as the official instructed then I’m sure a flag would have been thrown.

          • They don’t throw flags for face guarding. This rule has been in effect for something like three years. The NFL officials did not say the call was wrong. One questioned that maybe the tug on the Jersey could have been but was not because it did not interfere or impede the receiver in anyway and if you look at games this happens many times and a penalty is not called. The Dez Bryant situation could have been but that was up to the refs on the field if they thought it in any way was interfering with the game. And if Bryant had not heeded the order to get back. That’s why there was no foul. The facemask penalty on the receiver was missed but oh reaking well.

          • How bout, he never grabbed the facemask you dumbass. His hand touched it, not a facemask penalty. How about the blatant hold on 4th and 1 when Romo was about to get sacked? Have fun tryin to pull the refs in Lambaeu

          • You’ll notice there wasn’t a flag thrown for facemasking. There was one for pass interference.

          • No facemask penalty? lol Yeah right that’s why the defenders helmet went down below his eyes onto his nose while the receiver was grabbing onto it. “His hand touched it” my ace… This was clear as day and at first that is what I thought they were throwing a flag for. Stop acting like a little girl. I agree that all these rules being made in the NFL to make it safer for players is making fans like you act like little girls crying so much. Detroit got beat by a better team is all.

          • Michael how about Dez running on the field with no helmet? unsportsmanlike conduct 15 yards. then the hold on suh on that “game winning drive” for cowboys. ether way that first down was ours and you know it. don’t act like this wasn’t bullshit.

          • To bad that penalty is a judgment call they dont have to call unsportsmanlike conduct on des for that that’s there decision so try again!! And I agree that there should of been holding on Hitchens and I’m a die hard cowboys fan. I thought that’s what the flag was thrown for. But the lions lost that game on there own I mean Christ they only scored 6 points in 3 quarters and decided to punt on 4th and 1 and gave the ball back to Romo the come back king so go cry somewhere else the lions blew it and the cowboys stepped up!!!!! Go Cowboys!!

        • Giants fans are front running frauds. You guys turn your back on your team after two losses and then pop out from behind the corner when they make the super bowl. No surprise here, just another jersey fraud hopping on jerry jones bus.

          • Some may. Most dont. I dont. Just like every other team in every sport in the world when the chips are down. Dont pretend you have found a special pigeonhole for every team fan base in the league. Judging by your name, you’re an eagle fan. I could sit here and recall the time when “ALL” eagles fans were running Donovan McNabb out of Philly but I know that would make me look dickish as not all Eagle fans would have been doing so..

          • Only difference is you never saw a sea of blue in our stadium. the Donovan situation is likened to the kaepernick one going on atm. Only difference is we wouldn’t have allowed Seahawks fans to take over because we’d show up to boo the man ourselves. Philly loves a winner, but instead of showing our backs to a loser we show our fangs.

          • Ok! So, why did we get a penalty when the lions punter tripped on one of our players?? It wasn’t dallas fault he tripped!!

          • Because the punter has to be given room to land on his plant foot. It doesn’t matter if he was hit or not, the ground underneath the punter has to be clear the entire time. Otherwise he could roll his ankle when landing. Kind of a game ending injury for someone whose only job is to kick the ball (or throw for TD’s if you’re Jon Ryan).

          • Because the punter needs room to land. If somebody is under the punter when he lands the he can, at minimum, get a sprained ankle. Do you know how hard it is to punt with a sprained ankle? It’s in the rule book. The refs did the job correctly.

  6. What about the hit on the kicker?? That didn’t get called!! The holding on Hitchens, NFL said it was a debatable call!! That’s why flag was picked up!! Which Hitchens also could have got called for face mask!! Now the hold against Suh should have been called , but it was missed like s lot of penalties are!! Geez!! Get over it!!!

    • The hit on the kicker, lol?? You mean when the Dallas player threw the Lions player into the Dallas kicker? If that had gotten called then that would be a good strategy for every game from now on… just push the opposing player into your kicker & get a penalty called on them. That was a good no call I think.

      I agree, there are always a lot of calls missed both ways, some benefit a team & some hurt a team… I tell my son, they wash out in the end. Maybe one game could seem lopsided, but the next will make up for it. You have to decide to just play harder and not let the calls, or no calls, get in your head.

      I think the thing that really stands out about this is that the flag was actually thrown, it looked like PI to many, but then they decided it wasn’t, but it’s still not clearly not PI to many people. That’s one of those not clear cut definitions & depending on who’s angle,who knows what it looked like. I thought he grabbed his shirt too, but I think I’m thinking of a different play, lol.

      But then reversing it after the head ref even announced it was just wrong. He should have already decided yes or no before announcing. That’s his job!!! I have to agree with Stafford, I can’t remember a penalty being reversed after the head ref announced it?? But I’m sure it’s happened, lol

I just gotta comnent lol but to the guy who commented that the Reffs and NFL dont like the Cowboys so they are trying hurt them with BOGUS penalties, LMFAO us 49er fans have been saying that for years and its true but the difference is you have A winning record and have been playing SOLID football so STOP IT with the THEY HATE US stuff lol because The reffs bad calls on you this season didnt KILL YOUR GAMES or SCREW your Superbowl chances like it did US NINERS. Even other teams fabs will tell you that.

  8. ONE call?!!!!! blame it on one call??? how about 4th and 1 you just run
    and get the first down next play? Maybe don’t fumble the ball and loose
    it in the last 2-3 minutes of the game ( for the second week in a row i
    might add) Don’t get a 14 – 0 lead in the first quarter and then not
    get another touchdown the whole game. maybe it was a bad call but that
    call did not decide the game all on its own…… and no I’m not a cowboys fan
    I’m a PACKERS fan who would have liked to see Detroit win so we could play Carolina

    Oh and in the first 5 seconds Pettegrew grabs/ hits the face mask twice the second one turns his head ( fingers inside the face mask is considered a penalty )

  11. Isn’t in the rulebook that you can’t go on the field with your helmet off if you’re not a sub? How come Dez wasn’t flagged for that? Either way though, not my game to bicker over – but it was a little weird.

  12. The lions flat out blew the game. Bad calls in the first half in favor of the lions but lions fans and cowboy haters don’t remember that. Blown calls happen in every game its all on how you respond to them. Clearly Stafford responds to them the same way being that he’s never beat a plus .500 team on the road.
