Let’s be honest, if there was no halftime show in Super Bowl 51, the score would have in all likelihood gotten ugly for the Patriots. One Falcons player not only believes the same, but insists that Lady Gaga’s halftime show in particular contributed to his team blowing the largest lead in Super Bowl history.

Most football fans are aware the halftime of a Super Bowl is longer than a regular game, with time added to allow the halftime performance to be set up, played, and taken down.

An NFL halftime is only 12 minutes long during the regular season, but for the Super Bowl, about 30 minutes. However, in order to construct the stage Lady Gaga needed to sign on, the time was even longer.

After gaining momentum that seemed like even halftime couldn’t even stop, the Falcons were off the field for about 40 minutes mid-game, and Falcons wide receiver Mohamed Sanu thinks that was one of the reasons for the blown lead.

During an interview with NFL Network’s Good Morning Football on Friday, Sanu was asked if the lengthy halftime show had a negative affect on his team.

“It definitely did,” Sanu said. “Usually, halftime is only like 15 minutes, and when you’re not on the field for like an hour, it’s just like going to work out, like a great workout, and you go sit on the couch for an hour and then try to start working out again.”

When Sanu was asked if the Falcons has prepared for the extended halftime break, Sanu replied with, “I don’t know if you can simulate something like that. That was my first time experiencing something like that, and it was different.”
