ESPN “First Take” co-host Stephen A. Smith is known for celebrating everything that goes wrong with the Dallas Cowboys. But the outspoken co-host went on an epic rant about the recent attention that is being paid to Tony Romo, who announced today that he’s stepping away from the game of football to pursue a career in broadcasting:
Let me sit up here and call out this network here. I’m going to call out my own network here, espn. i mean, this is a damn funeral going on. I’m sorry, did someone die? I mean, this absolutely ridiculous.”
Stephen A was very upset the show opened up with the breaking news of Tony Romo retiring instead of Monday night’s NCAA Basketball Championship game that North Carolina won over Gonzaga.
Stephen A added:
I don’t understand for the life of me what the big deal is. Tony Romo is not going to play — he hasn’t officially retired, but he’s stepping away from the game. Stop the damn presses. Tony Romo, a man that’s won two playoff games in nine years as a starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys who’s made $128 million over the course of his career, this man is retiring and we are making such a big deal about it. I mean, you actually forgot that North Carolina won the national title last night the minute the news came down. Adam Schefter reported that Tony Romo stepping away from the game. What the hell is going on? Everybody pump the brakes, everybody stop it, I can’t take it. It is nauseating.”
Romo is leaving the game of football to join CBS, where he will be the lead NFL analyst with legendary broadcaster Jim Nantz. Romo is replacing long time lead NFL analyst Phil Simms.
