REPORT: Giants HC Ben McAdoo Not Ruiling Out Benching QB Eli Manning

The New York Giants fell to 1-7 after an embarrassing 51-17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday and there may be major changes coming to East Rutherford, NJ.

One of the changes we might see this season is a change at quarterback.

Head Coach Ben McAdoo said after Sunday’s loss that the team would need to look at the possibility of getting reps to players who have a chance to be apart of the future.

Including quarterback.

McAdoo said Monday that Eli Manning will remain the starter for Sunday’s game versus the winless San Francisco 49ers but wouldn’t go further than that.

Manning has been the Giants’ only starting quarterback since he took over midway through his rookie season in 2004 and hasn’t missed a game since.

McAdoo indicated on Monday that he isn’t concerned with Manning’s Iron Man streak:

Manning will tie his brother Peyton with his 207th consecutive regular-season start on Sunday vs 49ers.

Here’s McAdoo’s full quote via Jordan Raanan of ESPN:

“I mean, Eli, he’s our quarterback, that doesn’t mean sometime we won’t throw another guy in there to get a look at him. I’m not concerned about streaks, we want to try to do anything we can do to get a win.”

That other guy is rookie quarterback Davis Webb, whom the Giants selected in the third round of last year’s NFL Draft.

Manning, who will turn 37 at seasons end told reporters at the end of the game that he has no plans of giving up his starting spot easily. Manning threw for 220 yards, with two touchdowns, an interception and lost fumble against the Rams.

One has to imagine with major changes coming to the organization that could possibly include a new head coach and front office, will owner John Mara allow McAdoo to bench the teams’ long time quarterback to take a look at the future when McAdoo might not even be apart of it?

For now, this is a strange situation that gets stranger after every loss.
