Two University of Illinois football players were charged with theft for allegedly stealing a deep sculpture, according to The News Gazette.
James Marchese and Drew Murtaugh appeared in Champaign County Circuit Court on Friday after being given notices to appear. The two were charged with a single count of theft between $500 and $10,000.
The two players could face penalties that range from probation to 2-5 years in prison if convicted.

Marchese told police that he and Murtaugh stole the deer sculpture, called “Startled”, from the Champaign park on April 29th while walking home. The two mean took the deer statue and placed int on the roof of their apartment.
Marchese, a rising junior linebacker, started in two games last season and had 18 tackles. Murtaugh, also a rising junior, redshirted.
Kent Brown, UI director of sports information, said head football coach Lovie Smith is aware of the criminal charges against the pair but no action regarding their positions on the team has been taken.
