REPORT: Ex-Packers HC Mike McCarthy Skipped Meetings To Get A Massage

It sure seems like there was a lot of dysfunction going on within the Packers organization that ultimately led to the eventful firing of former head coach Mike McCarthy.

In a report about the relationship between McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Bleacher Report’s Ty Dunne points to several factors that brought down what was once regarded as a potential NFL dynasty:

One of the more oddest tidbits from the piece was about McCarthy’s secret massages:

About once a week, a meeting would start up and McCarthy was MIA. Players weren’t quite sure where he was while, for example, an assistant coach would run the team’s final prep on the Saturday before a game. Eventually, word leaked that McCarthy, the one calling plays on game day, was up in his office getting a massage during those meetings.

One player had the same massage therapist, and she let it slip that McCarthy would sneak her up a back stairway to his office while the rest of the team prepared for that week’s opponent.

“That was when guys were like, ‘What the heck?'” says one longtime Packer. “Everybody was like, ‘Really? Wow.'”

 

The Packers fired McCarthy prior to the end of the 2018 season and replaced him with 39-year old Matt LaFluer.

 

Meanwhile, McCarthy was passed up on multiple head coaching openings.
