Sean Payton was suppose to be the most highly-coveted coach available on the market but even the team that ended up hiring him didn’t really want to hire him.
According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Denver Broncos made a hard push for San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, but were turned down as he opted to take the Houston Texans job. They also tried to “lure” Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh back to the NFL, but he opted to stay at Michigan.
At that point, they began negotiating a deal for Sean Payton, but before finalizing it, they circled back to DeMeco Ryans to see if they could make one final push:
Now, this could likely be because the Broncos didn’t want to pay the exorbitant price the Saints were asking for but ultimately the Denver Broncos paid up and landed a really good football coach.
Now the question is can Sean Payton work magic with Russell Wilson the same way he did with Drew Brees when he joined the Saints.
