The San Francisco 49ers have named Sam Darnold the backup quarterback to Brock Purdy which means Trey Lance will move down to third on the depth chart in an indication that his time in San Francisco could be over.
NFL Network’s Tom Peliserro broke the news, saying that Darnold will be the 49ers QB-2 following a ‘strong’ showing this offseason and the team is ready to discuss the next steps with Trey Lance:
There’s obviously little to no chance that the Lance will accept a QB-3 role with the 49ers, so this probably means the team will look at trade options. The move comes as a shock as the 49ers paid a fortune to trade up and draft Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft.
