Cam Newton Shares Wild Story About Jimmy Clausen Charging Him $1 Million For Jersey Number

Cam Newton wore No. 1 throughout his 10-year career with the Carolina Panthers, but if Cam had it his way, he would’ve worn another number.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft revealed in his latest YouTube vlog that he originally wanted to wear No. 2 in the NFL, which was the asme number he wore during his college career at Auburn. However, No. 2 belonged to his-then teammate Jimmy Clausen, who want an insane amount of money for it.

“Jimbo, he’s like, ‘Shit, if you want it, you gotta pay for it,'” Newton said. “I was like, ‘Cool, how much?’ He said, ‘A million.'”

Newton said he turned down Clausen’s offer, pointing out to his teammate that some people don’t even make $1 million in their life. Clausen then came back with a lower price tag of $750K, which Newton declined.

“Hung that phone up, I called the equipment manager, I said, ‘I’m rocking with No. 1,'” Newton said. “I made an oath to myself, I said, ‘That will be the last time Jimmy Clausen will ever be heard of in Carolina.'”

Clausen was the Panthers starting quarterback in 2010, posting a 1-9 record. After the Panthers drafted Newton, Clausen was demoted to third string and was eventually released in 2013.
