Patrick Mahomes Says Mecole Hardman Didn’t Know OT Rules When He Caught Game-Winning TD Pass

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime in Super Bowl 58 after Patrick Mahomes found Mecole Hardman for the game-winning score.

But Hardman didn’t know the victory was secured when he caught the ball and got in the end zone.

After Mecole Hardman caught the game-winning three-yard touchdown pass, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes said on NFL Network that the veteran receiver didn’t realize he won the game.

“Can I tell a quick funny story? I threw a touchdown to this dude to end the game, and he had no idea,” Mahomes said, with his arm around Hardman. I said, ‘Dude, we just won the Super Bowl.’ He had no idea. He didn’t even celebrate at the beginning.”

To be fair, this was the first game played under the new playoff overtime rules where both teams are guaranteed to possess the ball even if the team that received the ball first scores a touchdown on the opening drive.
