The Kansas City Chiefs hung on to a 27-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens but the win didn’t come without controversy.
At the end of the first half, the Ravens lined up for a 2nd-and-goal play from KC’s 7-yard line with nine seconds left, there was some confusion among Chiefs players while attempting to line up before the snap.
The Chiefs called timeouts and that’s where the violation occurred. Replay showed that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was the one who called timeout.
The problem is, only the head coach is allowed to call timeout from the sideline.
Former NFL referee and current NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay hopped on the broadcast and indicated that yes, something got screwed up.
“He can’t do that,” McAulay said of Spagnuolo. “It has to be the head coach who comes down. Nobody else can call a timeout on the sideline except the head coach.”
