This year, FOX is televising Super Bowl 59 between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles and they are cashing in big time. According to Brian Steinberg of Variety, Fox Corp. has sold at least 10 ad spots during the Super Bowl for more than $8 million.
Fox Corporation CEO Lachlan Murdoch told reporters in November the network sold out its Super Bowl ad inventory at “what we believe are record pricing.”
Deadline’s Dade Hayes reports at the time of Murdoch’s comments that the price for a 30-second spot was “believed to be north of $7 million” but that it “surged even higher in the intervening months.”
According to Deadline, the average price for a Super Bowl 59 ad is $7.5 million, making it the highest in history and a $500,000 increase form last year’s game between the 49ers and Chiefs that was aired on CBS.
The $500,000 price hike is the largest single-season increase for Super Bowl ad sales since the 2021 NFL season ($900,000). That season comes with a caveat because the cost for a Super Bowl ad during the 2020 season was flat from the previous year ($5.6 million) in part because ratings were down for all sports, including Super Bowl 55, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Per Hayes, Fox could end up making around $700 million in ad revenue by having broadcast rights for this year’s Super Bowl.
