The San Francisco 49ers are trading wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a 2025 fifth round pick, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Samuel told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Feb. 9 that the 49ers gave his camp permission to find a trade partner.
“It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle because of the relationship that we have,” Samuel told Schefter about his discussions with the coaching staff that led up to the request. “But I have to do what’s best. I’m more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime but now I think it’s best that we find another team.”
Samuel now joins an up-and-coming Commanders squad coming off an NFC championship game appearance. While they lost to the eventual champion Philadelphia Eagles, the Commanders seem in good hands for the long-term with Jayden Daniels showing out as a rookie. He now gets a new weapon alongside Terry McLaurin and the emerging Dyami Brown.
