Philip Rivers comeback has ended.
The Indianapolis Colts have benched the 44-year-old Rivers and will start rookie Riley Leonard at quarterback in Sunday’s season finale against the Houston Texans, ending Rivers’ run after coming out of a five-year retirement.
Rivers, the legendary quarterback, who retired after just one season with the Colts in 2020, rejoined the team earlier this month after the season-ending injury to starter Daniel Jones. The team was also dealing with their 2023 first-round pick Anthony Richardson being on injured reserve due to an eye injury and were left with very options as their playoff hopes hanged on by a thread.
With the Colts now eliminated from playoff contention following a 23-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17, the team decided it was best to start the rookie Leonard instead of the 44-year-old Rivers who is clearly not in their future plans.
