Today is the big day for players who had the franchise tag placed on them as it’s the deadline for franchise tag recipients to sign multi-year deals and avoid playing on the one-year tag for the upcoming 2023 season.
So far, the only player who had the franchise tag placed on him to come to an agreement on a deal is Evan Engram, who signed a three-year, $41.25 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
One of the bigger names — Saquon Barkley — remains in a contract stalemate with the New York Giants and we know what offer the Giants have on the table for Barkley.
According to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post
, the Giants best offer to Barkley included $19.5 million guaranteed which is something Barkley declined because he’s set to make $10.1 million for the 2023 season and if tagged again, can make another $12 million — which is more than what the Giants would guarantee him on the long term deal.
As of earlier today, Dunleavy reported that the Giants had raised their guaranteed offer to around $22 million, which commensurate with two franchises tags but with the higher guarantees, the Giants have lowered the average money per year that they offered with the previous offer which included $19.5 million guaranteed.
Is that enough to get a deal done? Tough to say. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports that both sides aren’t “overly optimistic” that a deal will get done:
