Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick spent his Thanksgiving a bit differently than most this holiday, traveling to Alcatraz Island to make a surprise visit to the Indigenous People’s Sunrise Gathering.
American Indians gather there for festivities each year as a part of what’s called ‘Unthanksgiving Day’, an alternative holiday dating back to 1975. 89 American Indian activists and leaders make their way to the island which houses the former infamous prison, to demand that it be turned into an Indian cultural center and school.
Kaepernick posted about his visit on Twitter.
Today, I was on Alcatraz Island at the Indigenous People’s Sunrise Gathering, in solidarity with those celebrating their culture and paying respects to those that participated in the 19 month occupation of Alcatraz in an effort to force to honor the Treaty of Fort Laramie. pic.twitter.com/KdNtY3dp72
