LOS ANGELES, CA – Pete Carroll may be coaching in his old stomping grounds soon..at least the LA Rams think so.
After firing head coach Jeff Fisher Monday after five years with the team, it seems as if management is looking to make a splash with a huge name in the coaching world to fill the vacancy to match the new digs they’ll be moving into in a few years.
According to Yahoo’s Charles Robinson, the Rams are interested in trying to sway Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll away from Seattle and back to Los Angeles, even though he is under contract with the Seahawks until 2019. Ironically, the Rams face off against Carroll just three days from now on Thursday Night Football.
Names like Jim Harbaugh, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, and now Pete Carroll, have all be brought up in the conversation for the next coach of the Rams.
In regard to Pete Carroll, the theoretical move doesn’t appear to make much sense. Carroll, who’s getting “up there” in years, is sitting pretty in Seattle attempting to get back to another Super Bowl.
As for a case one could make in favor of the move, Rams’ owner Stan Kroenke and and VP of football operations, Kevin Demoff, reportedly have developed a ton of respect for Carroll. The team does have a talented defense to build around, though the coach would have to feel confident in the unproven #1 overall pick, Jared Goff, as the Rams don’t have any first-rout draft picks on the horizon to draft another quarterback. Carroll of course also coached at USC from 2000-2009 and has a house in Los Angeles.
“Pete makes sense in a lot of ways,” a source told Robinson. “There is already a defensive core in place for him to work with. He has deep coaching ties across [the NFL] and knows how to build an offensive staff that can bring along [Goff]. … He’s a California guy at heart and has a track record there with the L.A. fan base [from his time at USC]. He’s also a great, great coach.”
Carroll may closely resemble the Rams’ ideal candidate, but taking every detail into account along with the most glaring of probably hold ups in Carroll’s contract with the Seahawks, the hire doesn’t seem feasible at this point.
