The Arthur Ashe Courage Award given out at the ESPY Awards is one of the most prestigious awards given out to athletes.
ESPN says it’s recipients should “reflect the spirit of Arthur Ashe, possessing strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what it costs.”
I don’t believe anyone possessed the strength as Knoxville, Tennessee teen Zaevion Dodson, who gave his life to protect the life of others.
The story of Zaevion is that of courage and heroism.
Watch his story, narrated by Michael B. Jordan
On behalf of Zaevion, his mother and two brothers accepted the award, giving a touching speech that left many in the crowd in tears as she told everyone stories about her son while urging everyone to take a stand on gun violence.
Incredibly moving tribute to the heroic #ZaevionDobson from his incredible mother. https://t.co/QszNiL29Uc
