The NFL’s planned to open up the 2023 season with a Monday Night Football game that would draw eyeballs – and boy did it.
With Aaron Rodgers making his debut with another team for the first time in his legendary 17-year career, all eyes were glued to their screens when just four plays in, Rodgers went down with a torn achilles.
Despite relatively mediocre and sloppy play from both offenses through the rest of the game, the game stayed close and a rare made field goal off the left upright in MetLife sent the game to overtime.
That extra time was soon after concluded by an electric walk-off punt return from a rookie, send MetLife into mayhem, providing Jets fans with perhaps a few seconds of joy after a night filled with worry about the prognosis of their new star QB.
According to viewership data, the game was the most watched MNF game in HISTORY, raking in 22.64M eyeballs, up 14% over last year’s MNF opener.
Peyton & Eli Manning’s alternate broadcast also brought in impressive numbers.
