Tyrod Taylor made history when he led the New York Giants to a 14-7 win over the Washington Commanders last Sunday.
Taylor, who was starting his second game in replace of the injured Daniel Jones, earned his first victory as the Giants starting quarterback and by doing so, he became the first Black quarterback to ever win a start for the Giants in their 99-year history.
“It means a lot,” Taylor, 34, said Wednesday. “I didn’t know that going into it. If I’m not mistaken, I think I did it at another organization, as well [Los Angeles Chargers]. But I mean it’s history. Proud to be part of it. “Ultimately, I’m proud of the guys and the way they competed this past weekend,” the veteran added.
Taylor was just the second Black quarterback to start for the Giants organization since its establishment in 1925. Geno Smith made history when he started one game in 2017, but that appearance was infamous for the game that ended Eli Manning’s streak of 210 consecutive starts.
Taylor completed 18 of 29 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s win. The 34-year-old also ran for 25 yards. Taylor might be in line to start again in Week 8 when the Giants play the Jets as Daniel Jones remains sidelined with a neck injury.
