REPORT: Cowboys Set To Hire Former Bears HC Matt Eberflus As Defensive Coordinator

The Dallas Cowboys are beginning to put together their coaching staff after hiring Brian Schottenheimer as their head coach and they’ve made a big time hire for defensive coordinator.

According to Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports, the Cowboys are set to hire former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus to be the team’s defensive coordinator.

The team’s current DC Mike Zimmer told ESPN’s Ed Werder on Sunday that he was not planning on returning to the team as part of Schottenheimer’s staff and will likely retire. Zimmer, who ran the Cowboys’ defense last season in his second stint with the team, will leave an opening that Eberflus is reportedly expected to fill.

Eberflus is set to do one more in-person interview in Dallas on Monday. If all goes well, Eberflus will return to the Cowboys, where he was a linebackers coach from 2011-17, as Schottenheimer’s first major hire.

Eberflus has previous ties to Dallas, spending seven seasons with the Cowboys as linebackers coach/passing-game coordinator from 2011 to 2017.
