Protesting the National Anthem has gone from something seemingly unfathomable, something where not crossing your heart was regarded as disrespectful, to an act that’s almost expected at sporting events no matter the sport or level.

Though it’s been seen by many as courageous to subject yourself to the mass amounts of scrutiny by protesting, this story is about one young man’s courageous act that would have been commonplace in any other instance.

Connor Brewer is a collegian football player at Millikin University and ahead of the Big Blue’s game on Oct. 15th, the team decided that it would protest the Anthem by remaining inside the locker room during it’s playing.

Brewer reportedly went against the wishes of his team and chose to walk onto the field as scheduled and stand – alone.

Connor declined to be interviewed, out of respect for his coaches and his team.

“Rather than have our message be misunderstood or misconstrued, we are united in our decision to stay in the locker room until kickoff during which time we will engage in a moment of reflection to personally recognize the sacrifice of so many and renew our commitment to living up to those most important words: ‘with liberty and justice for all,’” the rest of the team wrote in a statement that was published in the Herald-Review.

“Please let there be no doubt that we have the utmost respect for the sacrifice made by those who served or do serve in our armed forces, including many of our family and friends,” the football team wrote. ‘Therefore, it is our desire to do nothing that could be viewed as disrespectful of their sacrifice.”

According to WAND 17 News, Some Millikin fans have said they will no longer come to the games as long as Millikin players stay in the locker room for the National Anthem. However, many fans do believe the university has made the right decision.
