Every year, there are reports are rumors that New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will finally become a head coach and year after year, it doesn’t happen.
But, despite last year’s decision by McDaniels to back out of the Colts head coaching job, he is still one of the hottest candidates on the market and the Patriots have begun preparations of finding his replacement.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk:
Per multiple sources, the Patriots are preparing for McDaniels to leave. He has interviewed with the Packers, and the Browns reportedly are interested.
The thinking at this point is that McDaniels will only interview with teams that he’d be willing to coach. Thus, if he’s offered the Green Bay job, the thinking is he’d take it.
If McDaniels does end up leaving, Florio named Kliff Kingsbury, who recently became the University of Southern California’s offensive coordinator, as a possible replacement. The Patriots selected Kingsbury in the 2003 NFL Draft, but he struggled in a short, injury-plagued career before coaching at the University of Houston, Texas A&M University, and Texas Tech University.
USC has reportedly rejected requests from the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals to interview Kingsbury for their head coaching jobs but according to Pro Football Talk, Kingsbury could potentially quit his job at USC.
