REPORT: Jon Gruden Is “Under Consideration” To Join New Orleans Saints Coaching Staff

The New Orleans Saints could be trying to make a big addition to their coaching staff.

According to The Times-Picayune‘s Jeff Duncan, Jon Gruden is “under consideration” for an unspecified position. There’s reportedly mutual interest between both parties.

Gruden has not worked on an NFL sideline since leading the Raiders after his racist, sexist, and anti-gay emails surfaced in 2021:

According to Jeff Duncan, Gruden met with Saints officials while they were in Tampa to play the Buccaneers in Week 17. The former Bucs head coach, who resides in Tampa, attended a practice and had dinner with general manager Mickey Loomis.

This isn’t the first reported link between Gruden and the Saints. He visited the team in May to help coaches build an offense around his former Raiders quarterback, Derek Carr.

Carr threw 25 touchdowns with a 97.7 quarterback rating this season. The Saints finished 9-8 after finishing four of their final five games, but they missed the playoffs via tiebreakers with the Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers.

New Orleans finished No. 14 in total offense, its highest rank since Drew Brees’ retirement. Gruden wouldn’t necessarily replace offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, who has held the position since 2009.
