NFL Insider Says ‘Execs Believe’ J.J. McCarthy Is The Favorite To Go No. 2 Overall To Commanders

The Washington Commanders have the No. 2 overall pick in next month’s NFL Draft and the are widely expected to select a quarterback with that pick.

While many believe it will either be LSU’s Jayden Daniels or UNC’s Drake Maye, a new report seems to indicate that it could be another quarterback.

According to Tom Pelissero at the NFL Network, executives around the league believe that the Commanders will go with Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy at No. 2 overall.

“It’s been really interesting, because everyone’s always trying to figure out, especially at the top of the draft, what the other teams are doing. When I’ve had conversations here, with executives from other teams who know Adam Peters well, know the situation well, the most popular answer to what they do at No. 2 is J.J. McCarthy,” he reported from the NFL owners meetings on Monday.

McCarhty is a former five-star recruit and is coming off a season at Michigan where he led the Wolverines to a national championship and a 15-0 perfect season.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said McCarthy had the best pro day he’s ever seen.

“I think he plays quarterback the best of any quarterback in the draft,” Harbaugh said. “He’s incredible. So, big market, small market. Cold weather, hot weather, it won’t matter.”

The 2024 NFL Draft will kickoff on April 25th.
